The skin-improving effect

Double blind trials with adult monitors from the general population were conducted to validate the skin-improving effect of Marine Placenta(Product code:MPC) (hereinafter "Marine Placenta").

Testing Agency FCG Research Institute Ltd.(Koto-ku, Tokyo)

Application Period Continuous treatment for 2 weeks (end of February to beginning of March 2007)

Usage Method Test products: A formulated lotion and emulsion which contain Marine Placenta. - Marine Placenta composition: 1% each
Control products: Lotion and emulsion (not containing Marine Placenta).
The lotion and subsequently the emulsion were applied twice a day (morning and evening) after washing the face, for 2 weeks.
(During the 2-week treatment period, usage of all lotions, emulsions, creams or other cosmetic fluids that had been used until then was stopped)

Monitors A group of 24 healthy females aged 40±2 years old with dry skin type and suffering from blemishes or excessive sensitivity to cold were assigned into 2 groups of 12 members each.

Test Result 1)Change in skin elasticity

After 2 weeks continuous use of a cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta, a significant improvement was seen in skin elasticity. In contrast, a significant improvement was not seen in the group treated with the placebo formulation. Thus, the formulation of Marine Placenta can be confirmed to improve skin elasticity.

2)Changes in skin texture

Regarding the change in the texture factor, which indicates the change in the texture of the cheeks, a significant improvement was seen in the group applying the cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta for 2 weeks, though almost no change in texture was seen in the group using the control product. When the texture was given a score (texture score), it was possible to confirm that while the group applying the cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta for 2 weeks showed significant improvement in cheek skin texture, the texture worsened in the group using the control product. This was a significant difference between the 2 groups. From these results, it is clear that Marine Placenta improves skin texture and keeps skin in good condition.
Below are cases of marked improvement.

3)Changes to blackened pores

In the group that applied the cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta for 2 weeks, the number of blackened pore decreased. In the control group, the number increased. In other words, the cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta improved the condition of blackened pores.

The effects of the cosmetic formulation of Marine Placenta The results showed that Marine Placenta improves skin texture and elasticity. Furthermore, visual improvement in skin texture and under-eye sagging could be seen after 2 weeks' application of the product.

Survey on the Promotion of Hair Growth

After cutaneous application of Marine Placenta(Product code:MPC) (hereinafter “Marine Placenta”) to C57BL/6 mice, the effectiveness of the test substance in promoting hair growth was evaluated by observing the changes in skin color and skin morphology.

Test Result Changes in skin color
The color of the hair loss area on the back of each mouse was observed and recorded every day, divided into the following three growth phases, and photographed.

The number of days it took for the skin color to turn gray after becoming black for the group with cutaneous application of Marine Placenta was clearly longer than the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.01).The black skin of the mice with cutaneous application of Marine Placenta did not turn entirely gray until the end of the test (after 25 days).

Summary In the group with cutaneous application of Marine Placenta, the growth phase of hair growth was prolonged, and the cessation and rest phases were delayed.
In addition, the data for significant increase in duration of glossy black hair compared to the control group indicate that an overall hair growth promoting effect can be expected from cutaneous application of Marine Placenta.

Cell Activation Test using Fibroblasts

The cell activating effects of fibroblasts, using normal human dermal fibroblasts, was evaluated for Marine Placenta(Product code:MPC) (hereinafter “Marine Placenta”).

Test Period January 10 to February 16, 2012

Test Method Normal human dermal fibroblasts were incubated for 48 hours in a medium that does not contain Marine Placenta (Control), and a medium that contains Marine Placenta. The mitochondrial metabolic activities of the cultured cells were evaluated using the amount of reduction in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test sample as the index. The MTT reduction amount in the Control cells was expressed as a percentage, and the difference of the two mediums was evaluated using Student's t-test.

Test Result

Summary A significant cell activation effect was observed with Marine Placenta.

Type I Collagen Production Test using Fibroblasts

The promotion of type I collagen production using normal human dermal fibroblasts was evaluated for Marine Placenta(Product code:MPC) (hereinafter “Marine Placenta”).

Test Period January 10 to February 16, 2012

Test Method Normal human dermal fibroblasts were incubated for 24 hours in a medium that does not contain Marine Placenta (Control), and a medium that contains Marine Placenta. The amount of type I collagen in the conditioned medium was quantified using the ELISA method. Additionally, the cells were dissolved with Triton X-100 solution, and the amount of protein was quantified. The result was expressed as the amount of collagen produced per amount of protein units, which is calculated by dividing the amount of collagen in the medium by the protein amount of all cells, and the difference of the two mediums was evaluated using Student’s t-test.

Test Result

Summary A significant collagen production effect was observed with Marine Placenta.

Antioxidant action

We tested the antioxidant action of Marine Placenta(Product code:MPC) (hereinafter "Marine Placenta") on singlet oxygen, a species of reactive oxygen.

Ingestion period December 19, 2011 to November 2, 2012

Test methodology Electron spin resonance apparatus (ESR) was used to measure the ESR spectrum of a control substance and that of the control mixed with Marine Placenta after artificially inducing both substances to generate singlet oxygen.
The ability of the substance containing Marine Placenta to scavenge singlet oxygen was tested, with the peak intensity of the ESR spectrum of the control set at 100.

Test result

Summary The results showed that Marine Placenta had an antioxidant action against singlet oxygen, a species of reactive oxygen, and moreover that this action increased with increasing doses of Marine Placenta. Furthermore, it was found that Marine Placenta had an antioxidant action against hydroxyl radical and nitric monoxide, both species of reactive oxygen, and moreover that this effect increased with increasing doses of Marine Placenta.
